Since 2019, GVL has supported more than 50 public schools in Sinoe and Grand Kru counties with monthly stipends for over 130 volunteer teachers. Volunteer teachers are appointed directly by schools, overseen by educational authorities. GVL does not recruit teaching staff.
The stipend program was temporarily suspended in March 2024, part way through the 2023/24 academic year, in consultation with the worker’s union, the Ministry of Education and participating schools and teachers. This was communicated in writing and through consultation with affected parties.
Following the suspension, GVL reviewed its records to confirm payments due for time worked between September 2023 and February 2024. A first round of payments was made to teachers in June 2024 and last payment was made in in September 2024
During the review period, a group of teachers took court action against GVL due to a perceived delay in payment. Payments to volunteer teachers involved in this legal action were paused pending the court’s decision, in line with legal process. Following the ruling, all outstanding payments were made by September 2024].
After comprehensive review and consultations, the program has resumed for the 2024/2025 academic year. Around 130 volunteer teachers have been engaged by educational authorities in Sinoe and Grand Kru Counties.
