Sinoe County, May 4, 2026 -Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) acknowledges the recent complaint filed with Liberia’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by the Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) and the Nitrain Community Forest Management Body (NCFMB).
We value the role of civil society in holding companies accountable for high standards in their operations, environmental stewardship, and community relations. We look forward to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to demonstrate our commitments and progress in these areas.
Progress on HCSA and RSPO Processes
GVL is implementing directives and recommendations made by both the High Carbon Stock Approach (HCSA) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). This includes:
1. High Carbon Stock (HCS) Forest compensation, restoration & conservation: Work is ongoing, guided by ProForest and working with relevant authorities and communities, in line with HCSA guidance.
2. Community Engagement: GVL is working closely with communities to agree revised Memoranda of Understanding (MoU)s, following RSPO guidance.
3. RSPO Compliance: GVL has not started new land development despite the RSPO lifting a stop-work order following the closure of the complaint in 2025. Meanwhile, we are focused on improving current operations and remain committed to meeting all RSPO requirements.
On Environmental and Land Rights Commitments
GVL operates under Liberia’s environmental laws and regulations. We recognize the ecological importance of the Upper Guinea Forest and the customary land rights of Liberian communities. Where past operations may have fallen short of expectations, GVL is committed to remedying impacts through dialogue, restoration, and improved practices.
Next Steps
1. EPA Cooperation: GVL welcomes the EPA’s review and will provide all requested documentation and access to ensure a transparent investigation.
2. Community Dialogue: We welcome dialogue with SDI, NCFMB, and EPA representatives to discuss the concerns raised and will continue to take steps to improve our operations where necessary.
3. Independent Verification: GVL remains open to fair and objective third-party verification of our practices.
Liberia’s palm oil sector can only succeed if it delivers shared value — for communities, for the environment, and for national development. GVL remains committed to this principle and to continuous improvement in our operations.
