Grand Kru County – In an effort to increase the provision of basic health services to the public, Golden Veroleum Liberia Inc. (GVL) has completed construction works on a modern clinic at its Garraway farm site in Grand Kru County.
The clinic provides free medical services to employees, their dependents and community dwellers in the concession areas.
The facility is also equipped to safely manage medical waste, prioritizing the health and safety of staff and local communities. This includes a placenta pit for pathological and organic waste and an incinerator to safely dispose of medical waste.
Prior to GVL’s establishment in the southeast of Liberia, citizens residing in these areas lacked accessible healthcare facilities. Before this new clinic was established, residents at Garraway farm would have to travel up to x distance/ y time to access medical care. This posed grave risks especially for the critically ill and pregnant women due to the long distances they had to cover to get to government clinics and hospitals.
GVL also supports clinics with medical and non-medical materials and compensates staff for services provided to its employees where there are no GVL clinics.
GVL under its GVL Educational Support program (GES) has also completed construction works of two elementary schools in Nemiah-Wilsonville and Garraway down beach respectively in Grand Kru County. These schools aim to provide a conducive learning environment and improve the conditions of children who have been attending school under a mixed shift structure previously.
The GES program is designed to support existing public schools within GVL Concession areas and to provide quality education for employees’ dependents and children from surrounding communities. GVL spends over US$ 200,000.00 every academic year to construct or renovate schools, provide teaching and learning materials, and pay volunteer teachers’ stipends in Sinoe and Grand Kru counties where it operates.
These projects form part of several project commitments made in the MOUs signed with the communities to improve access to quality healthcare services and cater to the educational needs of employees’ dependents, to positively change their lives.
