Mandatory environmental measures are legally binding agreements that affect the entire oil palm industry. Mandatory measures are mandated by the EPA’s Act 2002, the Environmental Management and Supporting Regulations. A major element of the Environmental Management law is the preparation and implementation of Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and their recommendations.
The writing of ESIA documents should occur while the farm is being planned. In subsequent operational phases, operations must be consistent with the conditions spelled out in the ESIA and the recommendations in the Environmental Management Plan and Monitoring (EMPM) documents.
Farms and POM Units enrolled in the Environmental Management Plan and Monitoring program are obligated to do the following activities for waste management and preparation of assessment data:
Ensure waste management practices are followed for substances like domestic waste, medical waste, used lubricants, used batteries, pesticide packages include waste that produced by palm oil mill.
Ensure that temporary storage facilities for hazardous wastes conform to existing rules.
Ensure that EPA permits for the wastes are in order.
Ensure that reports are submitted to EPA office as necessary.
